2001 V40 Air Con Clicking on Startup

When I start the car there is an audible clicking from under the dash. 30 clicks and then it stops. Air con works OK but with occasional random bursts of fan activity.
Does anyone have experience with such a problem please?

Hi Dave,

Mine used to have a slight "clicking" noise sometimes under the dash near the blower assembly. I got under there to replace the transistor on a sensor near the blower housing the other day. While I was there I pulled the cabin filter out and it was covered in small leaves and other junk. I'm the second owner of the car and it looks like everything had been maintained by the first owner BUT the cabin filter. I cleaned out the filter housing and replaced the filter. No more clicking noise and the a/c smells better! That might be your problem. The filter is pretty easy to get to. I'd check that first. As for the intermittent bursts of air... could be your switch. Mine does it too sometimes but I'm not too concerned because it feels like a nice random breeze on a spring day. Mercedes has that option in some of their cars. Maybe Volvo did it first by accident.

Though, I'm sure there's a Volvo Tech on here that knows the real reason for the random breeze.

No problem. My clicking noise came from trash in my cabin filter, but I hope that your issue is that minor. A filter is an easy fix. Hope yours isn't a bigger problem. Have a great day!

I had clicking once too when blower was on...

Hey! When did you take a picture of mine? HaHaHa!

That looks almost exactly like mine did! That seems as if it can be a common problem for those who don't change their cabin filters on a regular basis. Dirty filter and leaves = clicking sound. I'm glad I'm not the only one.
