Power Antenna Removal and Repair

Thanks for the quick reply. Maybe more detail of my problem will help. The antenna will rise one section. The second and third sections will not come up. I cannot even pull the sections up so maybe they are held/stuck by the plastic gear strip? I cannot get the mast piece off to clean or inspect. Any ideas on how to get the first major section of the mast loose? I'm guessing the plastic gear strip is either broken off in the mast, or there is something jamming the second and third sections from rising. I would appreciate any thoughts you may have on this.

I have taken the thing completely apart, but I cannot get the mast loose to clean/inspect it. Thanks for any info you can provide.

I found our 850 power antenna in similar state as yours. But after two hours of effort I have all new mast. Radio reception is better than ever, I can hear party music from Mars.

It was original, the three section that telescope into one another, only the base would rise. The stuck portion needed harder pull than Robert's video shows. The 3-in locking collar would not come loose, so I took the assembly to the bench, sprayed WD40 and let is sit for an hour.

It took few hard pulls - a back and forth motion - and finally it was free.

Removed the gears, thoroughly cleaned and packed with Sil-Glyde, and clear the drain line.

If my power antenna goes, I'll replace with a rubber antenna. I did this on my 760. Power antennas are not worth it IMHO.

I appreciate any and all efforts to educate ignorant Volvo owners like myself about the inner workings of our babies, so thank you to Robert and everyone else who commented here.

Now I have a 2001 C70 coupe, and when I inspect the power antenna motor the drum appears to be held together with a rivet, not a bolt and nut. Am I stuck with having to completely replace with a new assembly rather than replace the mast?

Does the plastic cover say PET GF30?

Just performed this after watching Roberts video. The only issue that I had was getting the new strip/belt to catch and feed in. It was very tough to do. In fact until I had my 14 year old son help, I was getting pretty frustrated. I had to feed it into the gears a bit and then put the cover on...then mount it. While holding it, my son powered the radio on and I had him immediately turn it off so it would pull the strip. After doing this (hitting the power button while I was trying to feed it) 4-5 times it finally grabbed and fed in. Done deal. Works great now.
