someone is sharpening a knife or running it against a steel something.
My bf is going to take it into Merchants tomorrow.
I don't want to go to a Volvo dealership because of the steep $$
May I ask people here (my first participation) what could this be?
Bf says it could be pads and rotors?/rotars?
The car has 40k miles on it. In 2012 my job was far away. Now I don't have
to drive as much.
I'd like any information that I can get please.
Thank you Matt for this forum
And thank you all in advance.

Hi Nancy,
Sounds like your rear pads wore out and are scraping the rotor. You'll probably need rotors for the rear too. I would advise you see if your bf can find a good Independent shop, doesn't have to be Volvo for this and get a price from them. Brake jobs are the bread&butter for chain stores and a good opportunity to make a lot of money off you. Fronts are probably needed too.

With 40K on the rotors, you may not need to replace them - depends how long you've been driving with the squeak!
Check out fcpeuro.com for parts. If you do the repair yourself, good pads can cost from 20 to 90 bucks per axle. If you have to replace the rotors, you can go from OEM costs of 25 to 60 bucks per wheel.
I learned how to change pads & rotors when I was in grade school, and it's pretty easy. I strongly suggest to everyone that they learn how to do these repairs themselves. It might take 20 minutes per wheel - 8 when you get good at it!
This point was really driven home for me years ago when my Geo Metro (yeah, really. It was my first new car.) was squeaking. I was in a rush and thought I'd have Midas do it for me. They came up with needing to replace the pads, rotor, caliper AND the hub - for a grand total of $1,200! I kid you not. Even if it was just replacing the pads, they'll charge you like 80 or 90 bucks for labor alone and it's so easy to do you'll be happy to save 100 bones.

Nance, like vjeneczko said, you ARE going to get ripped off for a simple brake job. It really is an easy job when caught right. I've replaced pads and rotors on my V70 in a couple of hours and that was with lots of fiddling around that was completely unnecessary. Are you mechanical at all? This forum can totally walk you through this job. FCP up top will work with you to be sure the right parts are ordered. ANY mechanic/shop can work on these brakes.

Thank you all.... I went through a trauma and could not answer until now. Yes they replaced the brakes in the rear - rotors and all and it was $1,000. New pads, shoes whatever else - shoelaces, lol...
Most important was that even though my father had known that mechanic and entrusted me to him, I still went there feeling like I knew something and that was because of you all. So many thanks!
Hugs,
Nancy

Also, I wanted to let you know that it turns out that they had changed the brake pads, rotars, shoes and everything else on all 4 tires!!! And the total was $1000.00. Just wanted to correct my update. Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year!

I know this is an old thread, but HOLY CRAP. 2 hours work TOPS and maybe 200-300 in parts if they are going top of the line... Should have NEVER cost over $500 total, and that would have been stretching it.Nancela4 wrote:Also, I wanted to let you know that it turns out that they had changed the brake pads, rotars, shoes and everything else on all 4 tires!!! I paid 35 each for 4 rotors and 30 bucks each for front/ rear pads. Total of 200 bucks. And using a floor jack and manual tools, I took a little under 2 hours including deciding to bleed the brakes as well!

FYI or anyone who reads this thread, I posted info on Mintex pads ($25 for the rear set). They are nice quiet.
