2001 V70XC - From Brentwood, MO to nowhere...

Post by xHeart »

Our V70XC repair of throttle body replacement did not work. So staying in hotel for few more days, through Monday. Some background here... https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=60830&sid=89e21071858a8a13d0cc3c63c59c0245.

I am 400 miles away coordinating this repair.
The car was supposed to be ready last night, Friday before the weekend. Shop says there is a SW programming problem (ETM Reload) with the new Volvo Throttle Body which shop ordered it by VIN number. I could not get the part number, but my search shows there are two PNs 36001822, 30711554.

So it continues...
Does this repairs must include an oil change, shop says there is gas mixed in oil? Or is it NAPA's pre-requisite for pushing their filter and oil.

I changed Pennzoil 5W/30 and MANN filter around thanksgiving.

30711554 is for the Bosch unit for later years. 36001822 is the new part number for the spanking new unit.

As I stated if you use FCP Groton's stock it's ready to go with no programming required.
Speak to Carol Ross (if she's not away)
If they can't program your car this or a used unit may be the only way out.

Repeated no start cranking with ETM flap closed will result in gas/petrol mixed with oil. I think that's a good call.

Thanks again Mike. I will prepare my notes for the next call.

I was not able to connect the dots -- but the conversation suggested that the shop downloads the SW from UK which had worked in the past, but the new unit would not program from what they downloaded from UK, puzzles the mechanic.

Once successful, would this replacement/programming cause other segments of ECU such as TCM calling "what about me". Would it open a can-of-worm?

Not intimidated, I say bring it on.
This car with 146,000 miles is all OE replacements in past 18 month of DIY repairs. There is so much said about the MY, but we can't complain, it has taken us coast-to-coast. This is first breakdown in 12+ years, talk about reliability.

I don't believe that other modules are affected during ETM reload.

XeModex seem to be able to program these while they're OFF the car meaning the ECM/TCM sw isn't rewritten however while on the car the system uses the ECM as a passthrough.

If there's corruption in the ECM it won't allow programming to the relevant module. Perhaps in your case they will need to reflash the ECM first before being able to rewrite the ETM sw.

Programming them on the car can open a can of worms for the above reasons that's why for older cars a pre-programmed unit is better suited and is the reason why XeModex have had such great success with their modules.

The shop is closed for the weekend.

Looking at my notes from Friday's conversation, shop assured me they ordered and installed new throttle body which is blank, not Magneti Marelli or rebuilt, said unit is installed, but they were having problem programming it.

I am assuming after reading your comments Mike "while on the car the system uses the ECM as a passthrough".

"If there's corruption in the ECM it won't allow programming to the relevant module. Perhaps in your case they will need to reflash the ECM first before being able to rewrite the ETM sw." It makes total sense.

The shop assured me they know what they are doing -- easily irritated.

If ECM is corrupted and restored for ETM install, what is my checklist for the shop before driving it away 400 miles -- we may not travel this area for another year.

Volvo operating manual should include instruction for how to beam-me-up an specialist to location. Many thanks.

Of course it IS a Magnetti Marelli unit whether new, rebuilt or used.

There was only one type available for these cars. The black plastic end caps will have the Magnetti Marelli logo on them, even if it comes in a Volvo blue box.

There is also another possibility here that the unit they supplied is faulty and won't accept the download.

They may now ask for further charges for ECM rewriting.

Keep us informed. If I were you I would have a $379 unit from FCP in my hand if this isn't resolved quickly. Fitting it is around 30 mins work.

It is back in our garage. My girls drove back Monday night, whew!
I asked the shop to return the old throttle body, and they did. I will post few photos for you Mike.

The drive back was close to 28mpg (27.9mpg), 55-65mph.
I had replaced all spark plugs with Volvos, cleaned original coils, OEM fuel filter and air filter, cleaned nipple, and rim around the turbo of any buildup around thanksgiving (last 30 days), and now the new throttle body.

It runs on 93-94 octane, and Pennzoil conventional 5w/30 since I took over the oil change two years ago. Urban life hence I change oil and filter every 4 months. Could it go higher mpg, any lesson?
