2002 S60 Thermostat

Post by sergio »

.

Ok, my thermostat should be replaced but I have a problem with the type;
Most places I called and/or visited quoted less than $ 10 for it and I got one.
But when I removed the hose, surprise, it would not fit :o
The original has a pin in the back. The new one has a dome/bridge. It is not the compatible.
So I called a dealer; $ 200  :o "Including the housing"
This is ridiculous you don't have to buy rims when you get a flt tire, do you?

Does anyone know where to get one without the housing?
Or any other solution? Please :D

I believe that in 2002 volvo replaced the standard housing with this one:

You need to replace the whole thing

You get the temp sensor included in the assembly

Costs less at FCP around $105 Gasket is NOT included

You can open the housing and put it back with some rtv

but there is no such model of thermostat on the market sold individually without the housing. no way to modify a regular type of thermostat to fit in there, either.

see this one on Ebay, it's a quality brand

Thank you both Mike and oragex

The one (from oragex link) is less expensive, but there is catch !!!
Although it looks EXACTLY like the one in Mike's link, verification makes it clear that it is not compatible with 2002.

I'm confused as I see a lot of thermostats on ebay /Amazon /and other sellers such as Rockauto etc pretending to be compatible but are not.

I forgot to mention, turbo and non turbo have different t-stat housings. On turbo engines the housing has an extra vacuum pipe that is not present on t-stat housing for non turbo engines.

The 2003 is interchangeable with 2002. Most sellers have poor listing accuracy as you already know.

Can you buy the whole housing and just replace the thermostat? Looks like a pain of a job when all you need is the actual t stat

actually the problem is removing the lower bolt of the whole housing after removing the steering pump, there is no access for a socket . if someone has a tip for this bolt I'm interested as well.

Mike, you mean I could get a full monty (casing/housing AND the thermostat itself) for 2003 2.4T then replace only my thermostat (the part on the picture in the first thread).

Are you 100 % sure?
Because the set for 02 S60 2.4T is not as commonly available as the the one for 2.3T
I see more for 2003 2.4T
And easier to replace.

Regarding the removal of the top part of the set, it wasn't easy, but doable, I have done twice. Changing the whole thing, I am absolutely sure will require removal of the pump.

Well it would only be possible if the t stats inside the casings are identical. Just throwing around ideas. Never done it myself. I guess with a good vernier caliper you could measure the t stat itself and replace just that part. Seems ludicrous to throw away a perfectly good casing but this is the way things are heading these days.....

I looked up that FCP link with a 2.4T in mind. The OEM number seems different in that eBay ad. Are you certain that Vida doesn't list the number?
