1999 V70XC with DTC p0236 & p0237

Post by isforfree »

Hey everybody, I've been lurking here for several months now and am finally getting around to posting. I purchased a 99 V70XC with ~140,000 miles off of Craigslist mid-October. I purchased her off of the second owner, who had her for about a year. During that time the bevel gear and alternator were replaced by the local Volvo specialist shop "Daisywagen". Prior to that the car was maintained and serviced at the dealership by the first owner. I have all of those records.

There were a few things wrong at the time of my purchase, the parking brake didn't work, the driverside headlight wiper didn't work, and the rear window washer jet didn't work. Additionally, when I had a buyers inspection done by Daisywagen prior my purchase, the technician noted the right ball joint has some play and the positive battery cable was corroded and would get warm/hot. Knowing these things I went ahead with the purchase and have been have been pleased (albeit paranoid of every noise I hear) with it since.

So far I have: replaced the parking brake cables, shoes, and hardware, given it a seafoam treatment, changed the oil and the spark plugs. I'm pretty good with my hands, and have always enjoyed working on cars, but I haven't been wrenching for a few years as I've been at university and had no car. Last time I was regularly working on anything I was in highschool and had access to my school's shop, and all the tools I needed. Crawling around on the garage floor has been a different experience to say the least.

Replacing the parking brake assembly was a PITA but I managed to get it done after a few setbacks from various seized nuts/bolts.

While attempting to suck the seafoam through the brake booster line instead of successfully removing the vacuum line, I believe I broke the plastic "y" adapter pictured here:

I am able to push the two halves together though and everything works fine, even still, I would like to replace the component. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great, I have had no success finding the part listed anywhere.

That brings us to now... the other day when I started the car there was a CEL on. The car runs and drives, but has a few quirks. A lot of the time, as I first start to accelerate the engine will stumble and the RPMs dive before recovering. The car, in effect, is just repeatedly lurching forward initially. This seems to get better the longer the car has been running. At other times (typically higher speeds), with my foot steady on the accelerator, the RPMs tend to jump and the car surges momentarily.

I have pulled codes p0236 and p0237. Which, from my googling seems to point to the boost pressure sensor. I haven't seen any descriptions matching my cars behavior though, so I thought I would get everybody's opinion before buying the component when the dealership parts department opens tomorrow.

Thanks!

The part you broke is called an injector. I broke one on a 2000 S70 GLT SE. For that car it was
part# 8677893, $50.00 at the dealer. I tried a quick search of online parts suppliers and got a hit at

I think it's a sort of venturi that increases vacuum; my 2002 BMW 525 uses the same part and calls it a "sucking jet pump". You'll likely have a vacuum leak unless you replace it or can solvent weld it back together.

I replaced my boost pressure sensor today, cleared the CEL, and took her for a drive. Everything went wonderfully!

reading your story make me worry about your pos. battery cable, and also the condition of the B+ cable to the fuse box. what is your batt voltage when motor is on? search voltage drop and read about the B+ cable which in all likelihood, is bad in your car.
