2004 S60 Strange Xenon headlight problem

Post by clauswogesdk »

Hi everyone
I am new to this forum as well as new to owning a S60 D5, but i like it so far :), except from a strange problem with the Xenon headlight. When the lights are turned on they are mechanically turned in position for normal driving, the Xenons lights up perfectly and stays on, but a message turns up on the display saying there is an error in the headlights and that they need service. When this happens the lights are lowered mechanically and stays down, even if i shift the lights to the far position. During this, as i mentioned earlier, the Xenon bulbs stays on, full power. The problem was not consistant in the beginning but by now it is constantly a problem.
I am waiting for my DICE, but as that may take a while to arrive, i wonder if anybody knows this problem (and the solution maybe)??
Regards
Claus

My suspicion would be for the level sensor attached to rear suspension. A fault there affects headlamp leveling on both lamps.

There are position sensors in headlamp units but when one of those goes bad you get a right or left lamp needs service message.

My 04 XC70 once had similar problem while I was driving on the freeway. I flashed the high beam several time while continue driving corrected that. I read about this issue somewhere this was caused by the jam in the light assembly. I then cleaned them up. It's been good for few moths now.

Will have a look at the level sensor when i have the Volvo Dice up and running, meantime i will try to cleanup all connections see where that brings me. Thanks for the input :-)

Right! Cleaned everything on the actuator connectors. Disassembled the actuators that moves the interior of the headlight, cleaned and greased it, now runs even smoother than they all ready did.
Had a look at the level sensor and were able to make the lights move up and down by pushing the level sensor link, so that seams to work ok. Also checked for loose connection on the level sensor connector, seems quite all right.
Still the error keeps turning up on the display. My suspicion is now focused on the position sensor in the actuators and the fact that the Xenon bulbs are of some unknown low price type fitted by the previous owner, any body with experience on low price Xenon bulbs.
