2004 XC90 T6 Timing Issues

Post by kickin_it »

I was diagnosed with a failed water pump. I am replacing it and doing the usual timing maintenance. I am replacing water pump, timing belt, accessory belt, timing tensioner, timing pulley, thermostat and performing the nipple replace on the thermostat housing. I am stuck though, I cannot for the life of me see the timing marks on the crankshaft. I have the marks lined up on the cam but cannot tell when I am lined up on the crank. What is the trick for locating these marks?
The crank seems to have this shield just above it that is hindering the view of the gear that normally has the notch in the valley of the gear.

Here is a zoomed in shot. I have removed the vibration damper and loosened the ECM box to try and get a better view but I can't! What is the trick to making sure I am in time so I can mark everything?

So the crank gear turns twice to every one turn of the cam correct? So I basically have a 50% shot of having the crank in the right spot?

Edit: Awful math and terrible thinking.

I think i FINALLY found the smallest hint of a notch on the crank.
