Oil Light comes on after driving:goes off & returns

Post by Cimaj »

94, 850, non turbo, 200K, use mobil 1 synthetic

Have driven car about 200 miles with this problem. Mechanic thought it was oil viscosity was too thin w/mobil 1 syn 0W40, Drained most oil, added 3 quarts of Mobil 1 syn 15w45 to thicken. Problem persisted but less. Put in almost all Mobil 1 syn 15w45. Even better at first but today now worse than ever. Lifters used to tick a bit but usually only temporarily (OW40 was to help with that) but this morning the worst ever!! Why the low oil pressure ? If oil pump why only after driving some?
Ideas??

200k is not allot of mileage on a volvo...the 2.4 lt is know for 350-400 km if well kept. try 5w30 valvoline full synthetic...if this does not cure it...get the pump checked..

:( at worse, if the engine was abused and not maintained properly, it may be on it's last leg...

If possible try to have your mechanic disconnect your oil pressure sending unit and hook up temporarily an accurate pressure gauge. This will give you a better more acurate reading of oil pressure. It will also show if there is a problem with the sender.

The owners manual on the '93 850 says that tappet noise that is noticed upon startup is normal and that the enging should not be revved until it goes away. The tappets/sometimes called lifters are self adjusting. I believe that they are also hydraulic, so the thinner oil will drain out of them easier and faster when warm causing the noise upon initial startup after sitting for a while.

I would recommend the 10w-30 until the problem goes away.
