This evening I went for a short drive, about 5 minutes in my CEL came on, shortly after as I was parking it began to run rough and died. I made it home by keeping the revs up, but it's running rough. When I got home I used my basic OBD scanner and pulled a P0130 code. I disconnected the battery and I'll see what happens in the morning.
O2 sensor, MAF? It runs about the same with or without the MAF unplugged.
A few things that may or may not be related:
- Earlier in the day I washed the car, and sprayed underneath to remove the road salt.
- I suspect my battery is on its last leg, a few weeks back the car was cranking over slowly and when it fired up it was idling very rough with some white smoke.
- I've always thought the exhaust had a stronger than normal gas smell.
I'm going to check things over in more detail in the morning but if anyone has thoughts it would be greatly appreciated.
97 Volvo 850 CEL Code P0130, rough running, O2 sensor?

Check for a blown-loose air hose or something if it just started randomly in the middle of a drive. The clamps at all of the rubber to metal bits do tend to like to let go over the years.
The white smoke/hard cranking/gas smell makes me wonder if you possibly have a stuck-open injector? Is your gas mileage below 20?

Thanks jblackburn, appreciate the response. I'll check over all the hoses in the morning, make sure it's nothing obvious. The one time it was hard cranking was due to an extremely low battery, but the injector theory is definitely one I'll look into. Most of my driving is city driving, but I seem to get respectable mpg.
I gave everything a thorough look and no obvious cracked hoses, nothing blown loose, etc. the car will start up, run for about 5 seconds then die. I'm tempted to order a front O2 sensor and see if that does the trick, also going to an invest in a nicer scanner.

It won't at least start and idle with the MAF unplugged either?

It'll start and idle on its own, albeit rough, for about 5 seconds before stalling out. It acts the same both with the MAF sensor plugged in, or unplugged.jblackburn wrote:It won't at least start and idle with the MAF unplugged either?

Yup, try an O2 sensor then. P0130 isn't the usual lean/rich codes...it's a straight up "malfunction" code.

I ordered one, hopefully it does the trick. Amazon had the Bosch for $67, seems like a steal. Thanks for your help, I'll let you know how it goes.jblackburn wrote:Yup, try an O2 sensor then. P0130 isn't the usual lean/rich codes...it's a straight up "malfunction" code.
