2004 V70 Losing coolant

Post by dejongmc »

I'm losing coolant around the oil filter. I can see it goes along the oil filter and it comes from somewhere near the intake manifold.
All the hoses to the radiator and coolant tank look good and no signs of leaking there.

What I did find is that when I put a rubber glove over the engine oil filler gap (cap off) the gloved gets a bit inflated, and I thought it should be somewhat sucked into the gap. I did this to check the PCV system that has not been serviced yet after 110,000 miles. Can this have anything to do with it?

i don't believe volvo ran coolant through the intake or the throttle body to warm them like some mfr's did. anybody else chime in on that. i have seen very fine radiator hose pin holes where an invisible stream (when hot) shot through the air to land some other place and made it look like a leak. the plastic pressure tanks can go bad, wiggle the hose coming from the of tank and check for cracks at the clamps. also look at the aluminum core to plastic tank seams on the radiator, the mechanically crimped aluminum ears lose their grip on the plastic. don't forget coolant blows backward while driving and drips down from gravity. the pcv system if clogged can pressurize the non combustion part of the engine and cause oil leaks and seal failures. changing the oil regularily (5 to 7.5 k, dependent on turbo and synthetic) limits buildup

the pcv system glove inflation should have nothing to do with the coolant leak. all radiator, hose thermostat, pcv systems repairs are pretty straight forward. if radiator hose is stuck to a fitting they make a pronged 90 degree bend hose "freer".

also if motor is turbo (or maybe if not) there may be a oil cooler that uses engine coolant between the oil filter and the block. this is generally an extension on or an extra assembly on the oil filter housing, it may have coolant hoses going to it or it may not and be sealed internally with o rings inside the housing. get a workshop manual.
