Hello all,
Encouraged by all the great info here I decided to go ahead and do all the work myself. I am about to order a camshaft locking tools off ebay, and I need some help here.
Obviously this is the one most people use:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Motor-Einstell-W ... 3a7cda2ac5
However there is another one that looks like a poor man version of the above, but the description does not mention is is suitable for 6 cylinder engine. However looking at it it seems like it would work just fine:

Opinions?
Thanks!
Thanks!
1999 S80 T6 Camshaft locking tool advice
Camshaft locking tools are not very expensive as you posted here. I suggest rent them from any local dealer or buy from repudiated old car hard ware store, its a job which you do once or twice in years.
by the way I must appreciate your efforts, I am owning Volvos from long time and maintaining them myself most of the time, but recently i got my timing belt change and other stuff, did not thought to do it my self. Good Luck!

Here is one for Volvos http://www.ipdusa.com/products/9735/120980-camshaft-locking-tool.
Your location suggests no place to rent it, like AutoZone.

The second one would work fine. All you need do is get 6 bolts 10 mm longer than the cover bolts. USe those 6 to start the cover down and then use the original bolts run down in incremental steps to pull cover down to head. Tap the head at the dowel locations to assure the dowels do not hang you up and cause more stress on the bolts.
Thanks. The location I am at really narrows down the options and the local dealer is useless (unless you want to get ripped off). I know it doesn't make sense to buy a tool I am going to use once, but in this case it will be worth it no matter what.
I will pass it on to another poor soul.
Thanks Jimmy for confirming, I am going for the cheaper one, will let you know how it worked out.

Actually at this point I am not planning to remove the head (although it might prove to be necessary in the future), but I do need to replace the camshaft seals, so at this time the cheaper set seems to be all I need, right?jimmy57 wrote:The second one would work fine.
