At a shop, brake job: front $331 rear $326

Post by matthew1 »

My 850 is at Pep Boys to get new Continental tires mounted, and as usual they called to try to sell more services to me. Pads and rotors. Front $331, rear $326.

I can't imagine paying $650+ for this. It's a regular service... consumables.

I'm not bashing them, or bashing upselling, and my 850 truly does need these items. I'm just pointing out that, well, somewhere along the line, these things got expensive. Or my dollars don't buy as much as they used to.

After replacing two front calipers with reman the brakes were soft. MVS folks suggested brake bleed, so I stopped at a local chain store.

I said to the front desk person, it needs a brake bleed.
See the quote below, with the tactics of "sky is falling", and they are doing it since the Dawn.

I drove back home and used 2-person method with the assistance from my daughter, and help from cn90, Jreed, and quirkysweede.

I can't see how Pep Girls thinks they can charge premium prices.

I can buy a set of Zimmerman rotors and Akebono brake pads for about $105 and do the front end in an hour. If my time is worth $100/hour that would be a $205 job. PLUS...you know they're using house brand parts, so their cost on pads and rotors is around $55. I can see having overhead and marking up parts, but I'm not seeing $331. They shouldn't be over $220 with one hour of labor and whatever cheap parts they're going to throw on. I know they don't pay their "techs" much at all, that's a training ground to learn and move on.
