Tired of the crappy oil filter wrenches out there?

Post by MadeInJapan »

I've broken 2 of the crappy ones in my last 3 oil changes. The first was from fcpgroton.com and the other was from ipdusa.com They both ended up being made by the same company- in China, so I started looking for the right alternative.

And... Found what the dealer uses: Assenmacher is the name of the manufacturer. The filter wrench part number we all want is ASTV410. It's on sale right now for under $13.00 here: http://www.tooltopia.com/index...33039
So, I just bought one. I'm hoping that I'll never have to deal with the crappy knock-off anymore.

I purchased one of the "crappy" ones off ebay that came to all of $9.50 (including shipping) and it worked perfectly.

Looks like the one that came apart on me. See the 4 little indentions? Those are spot welds and they broke when I tried to torque the filter to the proper specs.

Huh, I had no problem. How tight are you supposed to get those things? I didn't think they needed to be very tight.

I was trying to follow the torque specs which are 18.5lbs. ft according to VADIS but those on other message boards (I'm just now finding this out) tighten them without a torque wrench and some can even get them off by hand. Apparently even these hold a seal.
