01 V70 XC Flame Trap Delete ok to do?
01 V70 XC Flame Trap Delete ok to do?
Hello all. I'm am new here, as well to this model Volvo ( 2001 V70 XC ). I've seen lots of post on cleaning, remove & install, Replacement versus cleaning them, but I have never seen anything about the possibility of simply deleting them entirely. Can it be done with out causing harm to the engine ect.? Does anyone here know? The thought crossed my mind while considering a relocation for the unit considering how hard it is to access it. I had a 91 240 that I relocated above the intake for easier access.

There is no flame trap on a 2001
If you mean the breather box, it can be done with a catch can mounted somewhere
(Has to go somewhere)!

Ok. Thanks! I like messing with engines, but I'm not any kind of mechanic in the least. Care to give me a break down by chance to the catch can thing? Also just changed out my ignition coils with some IPD HD coils, and added a K&N panel filter replacement filter. Just today my CEL came on. ( if it helps, I'm wasting a lot of gas compared to the avg.mpg for this vehicle ).

These engines, in general, don't like K&Ns
If you over-oiled the K&N filter the MAF can get oily and throw a code
But that's speculation, you need to find out what the code is..
As for the catch can I can't help you. You may find someone or two over on www.volvospeed.com who has done it with heavily modded engines... but why would you want to bother?
Just rebuild the breather system and it will be good for 100K miles

Thank you for the advice
I took it in Tuesday and had it done properly. Today my cel turned on p0422 code. I've seen many posts referring to 02 sensors instead of the cat being bad. Got to give it some pedal to go,and it's using a lot of gas. Any thoughts?
