1995 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon Engine Swap Question

Post by shawny »

I posted my questions before about my 1995 Volvo 850 high pressure turbo wagon misfiring. I was hoping for the minor problems , but it turns out that two cylinder have no compression. The car has mileage around 163K, no overheating or other problems. My mechanic suggests some valves are bad and it's time for engine swap.

My engine has vin YV1LW5714S###### and I remember there is a EGR tube underneath the intake manifold. I believe I am looking for B5234T3 engine. I did some search and I could not find exact engine nearby. I am going to salvage yard and wondering if there are some other year model engine I could use. I saw there is 98 2.3L with 56 engine. I am not sure it will fit.

If I am unlucky, I could not find 2.3 turbo engine for my car. I am wondering if I could take non turbo engine or low pressure engine. I guess I need computer as well, what else do I need ? What are the options I have? Thank you.

That 2.3 from a 98 will work just fine. It is the same engine. You will need to either fit the EGR from your current engine onto it (easy to do with the 95 intake manifold) or better yet, get an ECU from a 95-97 850 without EGR, and just get rid of the EGR completely now.

An LPT engine will work pretty easily, but the non-turbo I do not recommend.

The motor doesn't have a VIN, they do have a serial number.

You can use any 2.3L motor from '94 to early '98. I don't suggest the '98 -1/2 motors. The EGR system can swap right over from the older motor.

I would suggest replacing the head only, easier than an entire motor. If a mechanic is doing the work then a motor swap is fine. If you are going to do the work yourself, do a compression test to see if the motor is strong before only doing the head.

You want to get a motor with the same PN if possible.

Oh, at any rate, I suggest you have a NEW PCV kit installed on the replacement motor. When ordering a PCV kit, there is a motor serial number break at 330,414. The motors after that number have a different size (larger) oil trap box.
