1992 240 Wagon Low speed stalling

Post by leighryan »

I have been having problems with my 1992 Volvo 240 (240,000mi) stalling at low speeds, mostly when coming to a stop. It is an intermittent problem sometimes not happening for weeks on end then returning. It has thrown a (2-3-2) " compensating for rich or lean mixture at idle" code and also a (1-3-3) "Throttle switch idle contacts misadjusted or shorted". I have removed the throttle position sensor cleaned it and readjusted it according to the service manual. I have made the adjustment so I hear the click as soon as the throttle cable starts to pull. It was misadjusted before as the throttle cable was to tight. I tried to test the throttle position sensor with a digital multimeter but couldn't get any consistent readings (Perhaps because it is broken perhaps because i am doing something wrong). I am suspicous of the TPS because on other occasions the engine has slight revving with no pedal input. I have also cleaned the distrubator cap and rotor. This has helped some but it still occasionally stalls out. After clearing the codes it hasn't thrown any new ones. I am thinking of throwing a new throttle position sensor at it, a distubator cap and rotor. maybe spark plugs and new spark plug wires as well. Anybody have any advice before I start throwing parts at this thing. Perhaps it should be noted that this car lives in soggy Portland OR and sits in the rain a lot.

A few months ago I bought a 1992 240 wagon from a seller who had just driven it down from Portland, and when I first got the car, it had this problem. It came around every few weeks just as you said, and I suspected a leak in the vacuum hose, which was confirmed. I replaced the hose, and after a couple weeks of driving, the problem vanished, never to be heard from again.
