2001 S80 T6 Cranks over but does not always start

I lost reverse, absolutely nothing one day. Took it to a local shop and had the transmission repaired, band for reverse had broken. Mechanic repaired everything and trans is working great. The problem is it the car won't always start. It turns over just fine but takes 2 or 3 attempts of cranking it before it starts and sometimes fires right up. The mechanic that did the work on the transmission checked everything(new plugs, new crankshaft sensor) he could but could not resolve the issue suggested we take it to the dealership. The dealership said it could be the starter going bad and affecting the crankshaft sensor, “gamma rays" no S@#T that is what he said. They tested the starter and said it was not the issue($500) and now want to pull the transmission to see if the engine and transmission are making good contact. Can anyone give me any suggestions?
