2002 S60 2.4T

Post by ecanup1 »

Just bought a 2002 S60 2.4T for my wife. The dealer (nice guy, not a Volvo expert) suggested that Volvo's recommendation to run high octane (91+) fuel for the turbo models isn't necessary as long as there's no acceleration pinging. I have run into this problem before with an '87 Legend I owned, and the 93 octane solved the problem. Assuming the engine doesn't ping under acceleration (i.e., no detonation), is there any other concern with running 87 octane in the car?

You should use higher octane gas (read your owners' manual). The ECU (engine management system) will retard timing to compensate for lower octane gas but really you'll probably suffer some in mpg as well as your injectors getting dirty faster. Use a decent quality higher octane gas...you'll be happier and so will your car.

Naw.
89 is fine for these engines.
I've owned several and run 89 with no problems whatsoever.
When I did the occational fill with 93, I noticed no difference

89 is at least mid-grade (at least around here). I wouldn't go any lower- say to 87. We too have a 2.5T and my wife is constantly using mid-grade. When ever I fill 'er up, I put the high test Chevron with Techron in her...this tends to be before trips, and most of ours include trips over the mountains...I figure it's good to do this to clean the injectors.
