The messages from the message center read:
Alarm System Service Required
ABS System Service Required
STC System Service Required
These three have been tested and are working just fine. They always come on upon startup, but they're random. When I start the car, one will always appear, but not the same one. I click through and often only find one or two, and not all three. Also, the check engine light just came on today, and I had it tested at an auto parts store. He said there was nothing stored in the system, and no current codes. Bizarre. I asked him to clear the CE, he did, and the light is still on. I'm wondering if there's a way to do a hard reset by disconnecting the battery, or if anyone has had a similar experience and what steps were taken to rectify. I'm hoping I don't need an ECU. If I did get one, I suppose I couldn't just install it, because it would most likely require Volvo software for it. Any ideas for the messages and check engine would be awesome, thanks.

You need Dice/Vida to check the codes stored in the individual modules. That or a very good scan tool.
Parts store scan tools won't touch it.
Apparently the ABS module among others will start putting out garbage onto the data lines, causing all sorts of issues when they are on their way out. If you unplug the ABS, and the only lights that remain are the STC and ABS, it's possible that the ABS module is doing this.
I had brake failure intermittently, attempted to repair the module myself, broke down and bought a Xemodex. That solved that issue.
Alarm service occurred because my alarm battery was dead. I simply threw the module out. It lights up on startup, and turns off after a few seconds.

I know, I should just buy a Dice/Vida with all the Volvos I've owned. Today, I found out the ABS was not working at all. I just slid with the brakes locked across 3 inches of snow. Is it possible to swap the ABS module (assuming that's the problem) out with one from a junkyard, or does it have to be programmed specifically for the car?

Can't swap a different unit on an 01. You're mated. If you have the module that has the part number starting with 8,then you likely don't even have a module issue.
I'd get the dice and go from there.

Matty, I'm going to check out the part number in the morning. Out of curiosity, does the part number starting with 8 not have problems? What did you mean? Appreciate it no doubt.

The dealer ran the Vida for the CE, and it said it was an error, so the service manager reset the light, and it has stayed off after an hour of driving today. He also said most likely the ABS and STC messages indicated a failing ABS module, and that it is a part that can be replaced with no programming, software updating, or anything else besides tangibly swapping the bad module out for a working one. I asked because I thought it wasn't possible because of what was written above. Any thoughts on the vehicle being mated with the specific ABS module? Or can I try my luck at a salvage yard..

I need to know the answer to this, as I have the same warnings on the message center. Anyone know about this?Any thoughts on the vehicle being mated with the specific ABS module? Or can I try my luck at a salvage yard..

Get the part number off the lid of the abs module first. Ifn8t is an 8619538 then go after the codes that the dealer put on the invoice. If the part number starts with a 9 then get the module repaired. Don't bother trying to swap another one in place, just get the original fixed.
