Laptop needed...VIDA/ DICE
Laptop needed...VIDA/ DICE
So, I want to plunge into reading my own codes, etc. I run Mac desktop and a few iPads. I understand that I will need Windows and a laptop to really do this right. What is the minimum requirements needed for use on a laptop? Before I buy any diagnostic software, I want to be 'ready' with the laptop. My brother-in-law is a computer nut. I will send him on the journey to p/u a running / used laptop specific for my needs...nothing more. Let him scour e-bay for something usable.. THEN...I have to p/u the VIDA/DICE stuff...$$$

Your bet bet is to find a decent recent laptop that's running XP Pro, and with a bigger processor that was what VIDA was designed around and works the best with.
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

I'm running it on laptop from 10 years ago. Pentium M(prior to Core Duo series) running Windows XP.
BTW, if you are in SE Michigan area, you are welcome to give mine a try before you delve into it.

I'm running the 2012 version with a Chinese DICE on a Thinkpad T40 (1.4 Ghz, single core) with a 40GB HD and 2GB RAM, on XP SP3. TPs of this vintage can be found most anywhere for under $100. Just make sure you inquire about the USB ports and graphics, some of them had MB issues that led to problems.AlanS wrote:What is the minimum requirements needed for use on a laptop?
For the record, I ran an earlier version (2010 maybe, again with the DICE) on a T23 (1.2 Ghz, single core) with 2MB RAM on XP SP3. It was slow but usable for the times I needed it to run. T23s can be had for under $50 and are pretty much bulletproof.
Good luck

DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE I MADE thinking that you need a Windows XP only (and not the newer versions of Windows).
I reformatted and downgraded an old Acer laptop from Windows Vista to XP (loosing forever all features like sound, network etc) adding a GB to make it 3. And it worked. .
Last week I installed Vida on a desktop with a Windows 7 Premium and it worked.
So, ANY version of Windows from XP SP3 up with 3 GB of RAM should be OK.
Check the attached .pdf file if you don't have 3 GB of RAM. Might work.
This .pdf is not my work. Just downloaded!

Also if you use Win 7 Home Edition you will need to edit the registry to make the Vida install believe you're running Premium.
