There are so many rumors, facts and misinformation out here in the S-80 T-6 (and NA) transmission topic that I feel I have to add my own. And I am not proposing anything as the correct course of action. This worked for me:
A bit over a month ago I was advised that since I had done everything else possible to get the engine running well that I needed to clean my ETM. I did that and it was great for a week or so. Then it went into the crapper. Long story shortened; I purchased a "used" non-rebuilt ETM from one of my favorite "recycling" centers. It had (I was told) about 70K miles on it. I put it on (new gasket) and fiddled around fixing a few small vacuum leaks. Started it up and it's been like a new car ever since.
During the interim I did clean the used one prior to installing. Volvo dealer and 2 independents advised me it could not be used as is and could not be reprogrammed. I needed to buy a new one and have the dealer reprogram. The cost would be around $650.00 for factory rebuilt (Bosch) or $950 for new, with labor. Everyone told me the "used" one was a total waste of my $125.00.
The costs drove me nutty. I talked with my indy and he and I agreed I had nothing to lose by trying it out, cleaning out any CELs/codes and going from the beginning.
I can't believe how well it runs now. Like new. Truly! No reprogramming, no new ETM or rebuilt. Just an old Italian (yellow tag) MM.

Most of the "programming" is not needed. If the throttle came from the same engine type and transmission you are 90% home.
Check Don's ETM Room for lots of stories verifying this. The ones that can't be "programmed" are usually faulty.
By the way this thread was for a Bosch ETA throttle which doesn't require programming; just clear codes and leave ignition ON for 40 secs. They sell on Amazon NEW for $220.
