1991 240 Transmission not engaging any gear.

Post by yosef7 »

My 91 240 automatic transmission stopped working yesterday. Engine runs and revs fine. It was slow in shifting gears the day before but nothing to suggest a total failure. Yesterday, I backed up. went forward and drove aprox 6 miles city to hwy and the transmission was no longer engaged while driving. Pulled over and called for a tow. After checking fluid levels and color/smell. (Both fine) I thought, give it a try. It worked for about another mile or two. I waited again and again it worked, for another mile. Limped it back home this way. Any ideas of what I should look at today.? Great vehicle other wise. 250k on the vehicle. yosef

Changed fluid. Helped for short trip. fluid gets hot and no movement. Any ideas on rebuilding, replacing, or I will have to sell.

Is it leaking out somewhere? when was the last time you changed the tranny filter. sometimes they leak at the spedo cable going into the tranny. mine is doing it now. I just add a tab of ATF daily until I can fix the leak, but it shifts fine.

Maybe it's time for a rebuild? how many miles on it? junkyard have em for cheap if you decide to buy another tranny. just don't crush it!!!

Thanks. I just changed the fluid the week this started. no leaks. I think it is time for a rebuild. Seals must not be holding when fluid gets hot and thin.

When you are checking the autobox fluid level you are doing it with the engine running, if not the dipstick won't read the level correctly - Mike

Did this problem start before or after changing the fluid?
