2005 T5 S-80 Timing belt/P2188, P0101

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2005 T5 S-80 Timing belt/P2188, P0101

Post by searay440 »

I recently changed the timing belt, water pump and serpentine belt. While trying to make sure I was near TDC I pulled and replaced the number 1 coil pack and plug. I also removed the turbo pipe that goes across the plug cover. I drove the car approximately 40 miles and the CEL came on. The OBDII scan produced a P2188 and P0101.
Last night I pulled the turbo pipe and the cover again, pulled the coil pack and plug sprayed some contact cleaner on the coil pack connection, put some dielectric grease on the contacts and reassembled. I also cleaned the pipe and connecting hoses and re-clamped them.
If I disconnect the battery to clear the codes the car runs fine for about 20 miles and the CEL comes back on. As long as I disconnect the battery every day the only code that shows up is the P0101. The P2188 shows up if I continue driving without clearing the P0101. I replaced the MAF sensor about 50K ago and find it hard to believe it just happened to go out right after the work I did.
Does anyone know if a bad MAF sensor will cause a P2188 ('to rich on bank 1') code?
Any idea's?

Thanks,

Jim

After watching some videos and some reading I have decided to replace the MAF sensor. One of the tests said to unplug the sensor while the car is running and if it runs better without the sensor than that was a pretty sure sign it was the sensor. Mine stopped stuttering and the idle smoothed right out so I have gone ahead and ordered a new one.
The first time it was replaced, at least since I have owned it, was at 58k in Feb. of 2010 and now it has 120k on it so that is 10k more.
One other thing the P2188 has only showed up one more time and again that was after driving it for a while with the CEL on.

I had similar issues with my XC90 2.5 T '05 with 120k miles. Same fault codes. Kept returning MAF sensors thinking they were bad. I finally decided to inspect my PCV circuit. What a mess. Ports from and to the block were totally clogged up. I had to drop the oil pan to clean the lower one. One of the vacuum hoses behind the intake manifold was cracked and therefore creating a vacuum leak. After fixing these issues my problems went away.
I was using Castrol 10W30 and now switched to Castrol 0W30 full synthetic. I am hoping it will help keep those ports clean.
Good luck with yours.

I have actually been looking into the PCV system as far as maintenance goes and it is definitely on my list. Maybe I should look closer at it sooner than later. Did you change out the oil trap box? Was the vacuum leak in one of the PCV hoses?
I have not replaced the MAF sensor yet as I ordered it online and they sent me an aftermarket one instead of the Bosch they advertised.
Thanks!!!

The oil trap I was able to clean it. I just filled it up with detergent and let it soak while I was working on the rest. It was nasty but cleaned up really well.
Yes, the vacuum leak was from the little PCV hose that attaches to the banjo bolt behind the intake manifold. It was very brittle. I just replaced it with some fuel hose that I had laying around. It should last longer than the OEM one. The only parts I ended up having to buy were the oil pan O-rings and gasket maker ($50 for a small tube). Car runs great again.

After thinking about it, I replaced the PCV hose that runs from under the spark plug cover and goes down to the oil trap box awhile ago. The hose pretty much disintegrated when I touched it although I don't remember it throwing the CEL. I am still going to look into the hoses though and like you I think I can find a better replacement hose than the OEM. It has been dumping rain here and I don't have a garage so....

Thanks

Well, I recently took Volvo up on there new "up to 1 hour of free diagnostics". I had decided not to start replacing parts randomly in hopes of figuring this problem out. I had diagnosed the MAF sensor as probably being the problem and had ordered two online and got aftermarket ones which I have read don't work so I wanted the Bosch one. The dealer confirmed that it was the MAF and only wanted $571 to replace it. I ran home and ordered one from Amazon for $102 with tax and free shipping included and took the ten minutes to install it myself. The dealer said the 2188 was thrown because of the P0101/MAF failure. I put 500 miles on the car yesterday and no CEL.
They did also diagnose that the PCV system needed to be serviced. I have parts being shipped from discountvolvopartsonline.com. If you haven't found them their prices are great. I live in Washington and they are in New York and actually want to sell parts. My local dealer is so fond of their parts I couldn't bring myself to make them part with them.

Can the timing belt be changed without the locking tool.Store videos make it look pretty easy without the locking tool. Just wondering if it’s a difficult job. Any thoughts??
