Hello, I have a 04 V70 2.5t 113,000 miles that this passed weekend I replaced a few deteriorating vacuum hoses, replaced a split hose from intake manifold. Also replaced clogged crankcase vent hose, oil separator and connecting rubber hoses.
A big pain but had to be done and now car idles great, has that punchyness that used to be felt at accelarating!
After 15 miles of test driving CEL came on with code P0497- (EVAP System Low Purge Flow)with generic code tester. I reset the code and CEL returned about 13 miles later. I drove about 60 miles over the weekend and car runs great, idles fine in park and at stop light. There is no hard crank issues cold or hot.
I checked the purge valve located under intake manifold to the right that has the hard line from under car and vacuum hose to air intake tube before the turbo and a pig tail from wiring harness. I can feel the valve click with fingers wrapped around it while accelarating but vacuum pushing out is faint if at all at the rubber vacuum hose end.
The part is $38.00 but wondering before I replace if it could be something else or are these little valves known to go out. I'll try a bench test w battery and alcohol first.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for reminding me of that! I've gotten a "loose gas cap" message on various occasions over the last year or so. I've been meaning to check the hoses down near the gas tank and fuel filter when I get message but forget. I'll probably get under there this weekend.
On a side note, I removed the purge valve and ran some alcohol and tested with a hand pump and 9 volt battery and seems to open and close properly. Closed lets no air through and open lets plenty of air through. Alcohol comes out clean too, no residue or grime.

Codes P0496 and P0497 are grouped under ECM-4007 for Volvo. Other than the purge valve, Volvo asks to verify associated hoses. See this thread on the subject;

The evap system is complex and very sensitive. Volvo has issued a service bulletin RTJ-16629.
From what I can understand a software update is available to improve the evap system operation. Basically it allows more margins when efficiency is measured. See this extract from the NHTSA.

This may help you get rid of this unwanted DTC if all else is good.
