2000 S80 Swapping B6294S with B6304S

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 S80 Swapping B6294S with B6304S

Post by yuckuJackD »

It seems my engine is gone too bad to spend more money in it (Crankshaft <-> Main bearings) so I'm planning to replace it. Everything is clear for me at this stage - take off the old engine and fit in the new(used) one. I can do that.
The problem is that most of the engines I've found are B6304S. It's 204hp made '99, the previous version of mine engine which is B6294S (200hp) - 2000y.

According to VIDA (and VADIS - double checked) B6304S could be mounted with the same set of gearboxes as B6294S. Mine gearbox is manual M65, so no problems with timings and communication between ECM and TCM are expected, as I don't have TCM at all :) No problems expected with the mechanical part of the job, too.

Mechanically it looks like the job is doable. Same mounting points, same intake and exhaust manifold are used for both engines. Both have VVT on Intake. The solenoid itself seems to be same part, too.

What makes me suspicious is the famous VVT and it's control by the ECM.
I can deal with VVT setting. I've done it, soi I'll do it again. As I said - mechanically it's all clear for me here. I've done top end rebuilds of 5 and 6 cyl Volvo Modular Engines.

Could I expect any surprises from car's electronics by swapping B6294S ('00) with B6304S ('99)?

Did somebody went though that or similar route?
Help, please.
Thank you.

I don't know of the differences b/w these engines HOWEVER year 2000 marked an important year for the 5 cylinder non turbo variant.

1) CVVT was added on iinlet cam. (is the 6304FS for the S80 a CVVT engine?)

2) Hydraulic Tappets were replaced with non hydraulic.

3) Engine castings were changed on the exhaust side for decreased engine vibration (though exhaust ports remained the same)

4) Only one knock sensor point was employed on the 2000 model.

5) The PCV system tubing was totally overalled on the 2000 model and the famous right angle nipple (which always leaked causing codes) was disgarded. The inlet manifold was therefore a different part number.

Can you retain the original head or is it toast? Swept capacity is 2922cc for both yes?

Thanks, precopster.

Mine engine head is perfect and I could make 2 in 1. The problem with mine engine is well known for the 6 cyl engines - for some reason (we all know the reason :) 5000+ rpm :) ) crankshaft and main bearings starts to contact each other, which is nightmare for any engine. (Tanks Ford, for changing the oil specs so that you could sell the oils from your contracts. Have you, Ford, ever heard that sometimes engines reach 5500rpm? What happens with the oil you sell in that moment? I know now, but it's too late)

It's too cold here now for swapping engine heads (I don't have heated garage). The plan is just to swap the engines, and probably after a couple of months when the weather is nice to swap the engine heads.

I'm searching, reading specs for both engines, but all I find is that the 304 was reduced due to emissions and renamed to 294.

For 294 I'm 100% sure the tappets are mechanical. These are mine from 294 when I did the top end rebuild:

CVVT: Well both engines has a solenoid on intake. (in non turbo engines VVT is on intake, in turbo engines VVT is in exhaust or both). But that's all I've found so far.

About the exhaust: for both engines the PN for exhaust gasket is the same, leaving me believe the exhaust wholes and mounting hasn't been changed, but who knows...

Searching/reading continues. Any help/ideas/advices are wellcome.
