1998 V70 battery or alternator or both?

I meant to mention, be sure you check the alternator inside, the part where the brushes ride. If it is deeply scored or burnt up you may still need a rebuilt replacement. Sometimes one can clean it up enough with a little emery cloth and live for another few months though.

It might be often overlooked, but check the battery cables. If there is a bad connection at the clamp-cable contact, it will generate heat and lose voltage. The cable will feel hot to the touch. It does happen with these cars, mine had this issue and there have been some like this on the forums. If you're handy with a soldering iron, you can try and fix it yourself. Here's a link for you:

Agreed. This part is called the slip ring, it is what it sounds like just a copper ring that slips over the end of the shaft. Very easy to replace DIY, you just have to find where to get one.
