850GLT Trunk Drainange Tubes?

Post by viper69 »

At the left and right of the trunk car frame, there are 2 holes that lead to tubes. They serve as water drainage.

My car gets littered with tree pieces and they get clogged, it rained recently and the trunk is damp.

After I get these cleaned out-which is a pain to do, is there a way to prevent tree debris from going down these tubes? The only thing I can think of is hot glueing some water faucet screen filters on them or use a mini version of those hair traps for bathtubs and sinks.

Has ANYONE found a good solution for this pain in the rear problem???

Thanks in advance!

Keep it clear during the fall season, it will not clog and the trunk will stay dry. I took me few years to get in the habit. It is now more than 10 years of dry trunk.
The rubber seal around the trunk may have contracted with time, give it a frequent massage, allow the air to breath through its pores.

I clear them every time I go to the car wash. The tip on the wand at my local car wash fits perfectly into the holes and, once I sneak the wand into place from the side with the trunk open, I just pull the trigger and watch the crap spew out the bottom. One short blast on each side clears them completely.

My local washer place won't fit inside those tubes. I'd like to keep it clean, BUT, I'm out of town often. In two days, it looks like fall on my trunk. The debris will have filled to the brim the space between the trunk and the rear windshield, and the gap between the engine compartment and front windshield (not an issue-easy to clean)

There must be a way to put a filter on those tubes.

Perhaps a legitimate use for a flame trap. :D

A chain saw for tree removal is probably out of the question. Installing screens on the drain holes will not help as the screens will get covered and mimmic a clogged drain sooner.

My daughter parks outside with a lot of trees. She is now in the habit of cleaning out the front cowl area before she drives off. I told her to wax the area around the rear lid, but she is too lazy to do that. The dirt that accumulates slows water runoff and just makes things worse.

Remember that the dirt on the front of the cowl will make its way to the cabin filter.

When I got my rescue 854, both trunk drains were plugged completely. It decomposed and looked like topsoil. I pulled the top of the drain hose off and used a wire to force the dirt out the bottom. Then I waxed the entire metal 'shelf', uncluding under the window and hinges, so dirt no longer accumulates easily.

...then you will wonder where is this mud coming from.
There is no end to joy of car maintenance.

I often ask myself, "are things coming apart faster than i can fix".

Let me hijack my own thread and ask a tire question.

I'm not very knowledgeable on tires. I have to put on a pair of front tires.

Previously I have had BFG Traction TX, 88H speed rating, size 195-60-15 (15" rims), those were $195 installed etc years ago.

I checked into Costco. After install etc it's $275.00 for a pair of Michelin Primacy MX-V4's , mileage warranty 60,000 miles.

Over at Meineke, it's $220.00, for a pair of Falken SN211-RMA (not sure if RMA is part of the tire model), the tire warranty is 80,000 miles (better than Costco)

It sounds like Meineke is better. However, I know ZIP about Falken, never even heard of them.

Input appreciated!

I don't drive that much, maybe 5,000 miles a year, if that. I usually get my tires/batteries from NTB, but there isn't any of that here, nor any of the parent company's subsidiaries to my knowledge.

Thanks for the wax tip..GOOD idea.

Regarding the filter, I thought of this clogging you mentioned above last night after posting. But it would make it much easier to clean crap off the top, than going through all the trouble and TIME of removing the tubes themselves. I'm not sure a wire will be good enough this time. I'll need a coat hanger I believe if it works at all.

I still think I'm going to find a way to put a filter screen of sorts on them.

The "plastic" interior molds of the trunk compartment require too much time for removal, so it doesn't pay for the mechanic to do it; I haven't had the time to do it. IF I can clear it just from the top, I'll do as you did.

I wish someone made a mold that would cover this truck space, and the space between the windshield and under the hood. If they did, that would solve 2 problems. This tree is KILLING me!!!!

In the meantime, I have to figure out if the clockspring needs replacing or not. As my horn is going off LOUDLY for no reason. The mechanic thought it was a nut that had come loose near the airbag. But that wasn't it. So after that..my only guess is the Clockspring.

I agree, I feel I'm chasing repairs at times, but it's a 95. Many parts haven't been replaced at all, like the electric window motors, all 4 are original. I can hear one on its last legs too. I'm sure that will be pricey to fix.
