1996 850 Heat shields over exhaust manifold.

Post by marcusmcd »

I realize I should have photographed this engine before I started working on it back in July. But now I am reassembling it--slowly. There are two pieces of an apparent heat shield over the exhaust manifold on the back side of the engine. The web abounds with front views of the engine but no clear pictures of the back side of the engine.

All I need to know is: There are two bolts with springs on them--a longer one and a shorter one. I know where the longer one goes, but don't know where the shorter one goes. Can you tell me and possible provide a picture of the pieces in place, showing the locations of the bolts?

They go one above the other near that little piece of coolant hose. Longer one down lower, shorter one up higher. I'll look for a pic.

Here's a pic that shows the 2 holes, one above the little hose and one below:

Ok, Thank you.

Just to be clear, the longer one will pass through the bracket holding the hose and both the upper and lower sections of the hear shield, right?

Also, how much torque do I put on these?

The bracket holding the hose is on the upper, shorter one, you can also see that in the pic. The lower, longer one goes through the two sections of the heat shield.

No torque spec, you put them in until the bolt bottoms out, then there is also tension on the spring. So you don't want to over tighten.

Thanks. I figured out the position of the two bolts after I realized the one piece had to go under the hose section, not above it. I've been really wary about over-tightening steel bolts into the aluminum block.
