1995 850 t5r burning oil on start up only?

Post by maxxt5r »

Ever since the beginning of winter 2013, start up has burned oil until the car was warm or driven about a mile. Pcv was done about 6 months beforehand his started and it's not leaking oil, I can see smoke coming from the turbo after the car is shut off so what I'm wondering is what could the oil be coming from on the turbo..? I'm going to do a compression test soon and I'm also wondering if someone thinks that the massive amount of oil on startup only is from a turbo seal and if I can rebuild the turbo vs buying a new one

oil on startup sounds like valve stem seals. the oil drips down from the head past the seals onto the valves when the engine is off. when you start it, it falls from the valves down into the cylinder and burns off.

check this next time: coast at medium-to-high revs for a while with the throttle shut - you want low pressure in the intake manifold. this will draw oil into the intake passages in the head. then get back on the throttle and look in the rear view mirror. if you see a single (not continuous) cloud of oil smoke, congratulations! you need new valve stem seals.

on the other hand, if there's smoke coming from the turbo that suggests other problems. try getting hard on the throttle with the turbo spooled up. if you see a continuous cloud of oil smoke in the mirror, that's your turbo.

You also need to monitor your oil consumption. You may have both issues.

What weight oil are you running?

I'm running 5w-30 and honestly that valve stem scenario sounds about perfect. When I'm cruising and give it 1/2 to full throttle and let off, a poof of smoke comes out and never returns until I do that exact thing again. Thanks so much for the help! I'm sure I can find a thread about stem swaps

Where are you located? I use 10w-40 which almost totally eliminated these issues.
