- how do I price the parts?
- how long should I hold onto it before finally getting rid of it?
- what parts should I pull even without a buyer before finally getting rid of it?
- what is the best way to finally get rid of the car after I am done?
How do you part out a car?
How do you part out a car?
Do you have a strategy or tips to parting out a car? Specifically, I have a 96 850 turbo wagon that I am planning to part out that has oil in the coolant and some other smaller issues (like a bad heater core). Is it worth the hassle to part, or should I just sell to some junk car buyer? If I decide to part it out:

Get on eBay, see what's selling and how much it is selling for. We've parted 4 cars, none recently as I don't have the time or patience for it anymore.
The entire front clip will sell, that includes core support, headlights, hood, fenders, corner lenses, etc. Somebody overseas will buy the entire cruise control setup. The turbo will sell and you may be able to sell most of the doors and interior parts. The radio, ABS module, catalytic converter, wheels/tires, random interior trim bits, window switch, ECC panel, ecu, rear wiper motor, ac compressor, alternator etc will sell
DON'T pull nickel and dime stuff that takes time to pull. If somebody wants the front hub, pull the entire knuckle (3 bolts) and that's what they get. Some clown will want the evaporator, windshield or brake booster, tell them no. Don't let people that you don't know come to your place to pull parts as it's a liability issue.
Things like the transmission aren't worth the time to pull vs. what they are worth. You will get sick of seeing the car and dealing with it, probably in about 3 weeks or so. You will be dealing with some idiots that will waste your time with shipping quotes and wanting stuff for free. You will have people wanting to pick items up and will never show.
When all that is left is the shell or you get sick of it, call up a junkyard and they'll come get the shell for free. The shell is worth about $150 or so in scrap value, if they want money to come get it move on to the next guy. Some may even pick it up and give you $50.
