2000 S70 GLT SE Trans Shudder/slip from 1st-2nd

Post by Hyperryd »

Hi, I have a 2000 S70 GLT SE with 172k miles. It was a one owner car that was regularly serviced by a foreign car shop. I have had it about 10000 miles and it is a great car in great shape. A couple of weeks ago I noticed a small "Shudder" on the upshift from 1st to 2nd. It only does it when warm and under acceleration. If I let off before the shift it shifts fine. I flushed the tranny using 12qts of fluid through the tranny cooler line and it is still there. It is only between 1st and 2nd. All other shifts are good and the car drives great. Am I looking at a full rebuild or is there something else that can be done? It is the 4 speed tranny and 2.4l turbo motor.
Thanks.

Check all your motor mounts, it's very possible one or more are shot and that could be your problem.
(Should be checked and renewed at these miles anyway)
Look at the lower rear tranny dogbone mount

JRL suggests the most likely alternate possibility to a failing tranny. I have another possible item to check. Have replaced your driveaxles recently? I had a similar problem with an 850. It took the failing of the aftermarket axles with a good OE item, and all of a sudden the problem dis-appeared. May be worthwhile checking the drive axles for failing cv joints.

Both the upper and lower torque mounts are cracked around pretty bad. I ordered new ones. I'm crossing my fingers on these. I can't tell if the actual front or rear motor mounts are bad. There are some hairline cracks in the back one, but they still look sound. I'm crossing my fingers on these being the culprit.
How can you check the axles without replacing them?

Hard to check the rear.
You need to carefully look at the small rubber bushings, but it's likely very due for a change out
