1999 Volvo V70--return of the ABS and TRACS warning lights

Post by paredown »

I got a rebuilt ABS module from Matty Moo last fall for my 1999 V70 base (with TRACS), and the crazy light show cleared up. Still had the ABS light lit, though.

Finally got back to the car project last week, finished the front end rebuild and soldered a frayed ABS wire (rubbed on strut link)--and after a couple of restarts, the ABS light cleared.

All good--until the driver's side ball joint popped out (my bad--did not get it seated properly :o  ) and tranny end cv joint broke.

Replacement axle installed at shop where I was getting the alignment done, and now I have the ABS and TRACS lights lit. (Did not want to do this, but I needed to get the car back home.)

Lost my light before I could check my soldered connection (but wiggling it did not seem to affect anything). Disconnected and reconnected the battery, tried undoing the main connector to the ABS module and reseating it--no effect.

Any thoughts--I read on someone's post that the ABS is sensitive to axle length/seating--could the replacement axle be affecting the lights?

Check the reluctor ring and wiring to the ABS sensor. The axle may have ripped the wires off or worse when it broke.

One or a combination of a few things happened.

1. The wiring broke right at the socket where it plugs into the sensor.

2. The new axle isn't bolted in all the way. I'm Doubtful that the tone ring on the new axle isn't uniform, otherwise the light wouldn't illuminate until the car starts moving.

3. When the axle broke the tone ring mashed into the sensor.

I had planned to replace the repaired sensor anyways--does it seem reasonable to order the sensor/wire and replace? (AFAIK, on the '99s it is a single deal--FCP has them for $83...)

(I got no satisfaction at the shop--the place is too busy--after waiting for almost 2 hrs while they checked and repaired one of the newly mounted tires for a leak, they said they were too busy to read the codes for the ABS. Didn't press the issue that it was working prior, since it was my fail that the car fell apart in their driveway.)

Your call on that one, personally I'd get a new section of harness from the scrapyard.

What kind of shop is too busy to pull codes and make a few extra bucks? Even with Vida you could have them in a few minutes, about a minute with a handheld.

Disconnecting the ABS module from power supply will not clear codes. Very few shops have the scan tool to read ABS codes from a Volvo.

Check your solder work. Start and run the car a couple of times, like before, and if the light does not go out, then it is time to pull the rotor and take a good look at the ring and sensor position.

Just finished troubleshooting my 1997 850 abs issue per midwest abs shop. Just followed the procedure to ohm the sensors and wiring per the site. Gives info and which pins to measure for all sensors. Took about 15 minutes to check mine with a ohm meter.
Mine was a bad ABS module..

Cheers--I think I saw your thread when I searched. ABS module was replaced so I have to check my soldering first, and then wheel sensor as Klaus suggested.

Today promises to warm enough to work on it.

Thanks for the link, though--I forgot MM had the troubleshooting procedure summarized there. I think my multimeter is dead, though, so I may be looking at replacing that first.

On the money on this one--because the wire was so frayed, I soldered the one broken wire but it ended up considerably shorter. So I folded the second wire over to match length and taped both. Maybe the drop pulled the repair (?) but however it happened the repaired wire broke just below where I soldered.

This time I got smarter--I spliced in a small section of wire and soldered both ends and taped the heck out of the repair.

ABS light cleared after a short spin around the nabe... :D
