Man, I'm starting to feel like I'm bailing a rowboat with a teaspoon.
Got my cheap ELM327 clone to connect long enough to read codes. I have:
P0130: O2 sensor malfunction
P0171: not id'd--list here http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/81 ... uel+sensor says this is "System too lean Bank 1"
P1054: says this is a manufacturer specific code--possible connected to the ABS?
ABS/TRACS lights are on continuously as per my other thread
The P0171 error is new as of this morning, and I did have the car idling for an extended period.
Paging through the rudimentary screens (freeware version) I see the following:
Fuel system status: -open loop (system fault)
The O2 sensor seems straightforward--and I can see the correct Denso on Amazon for $163...The rest of the details I have no idea and need help.
Background: when I first started working on the car, I changed plugs and oil, oil filter, air filter, replaced the fuel filter and battery but that was about it as far as basics were concerned. Rebuilt ABS module per my other thread, 157,000 miles, no sign of a timing belt changed sticker. Car runs reasonably well, although it sounds like it is going to stall when coming to a stop, rpms drop, and then it recovers. When I first drove it, it would stall sometimes.

Forgot to add--only a little visible smoke/minimal pressure on the dipstick when removed (have not tried the glove test yet); did replace the thermostat (but with aftermarket version; will get the Volvo-specific with the bypass and redo), and I found one small hose that had broken that connects to the bottom of the airbox--that was my first thread and someone identified it as the "vacuum actuator for cold start air supply to the plenum / etm until running temp is gradually reached" and replaced that. Removed the Denso MAF but could not see anything that you can clean??.

Pre-Cat Lambda sensor is shot, if the car is N/A then you will need a Denso DOX-1419 O2 sensor, this might also be responsible for the 0171 code but usually this one is an air leak, look down between the rear of the power steering pump and inlet manifold, there is a small vac pipe that is part of the PCV system in the middle of the scroll of the inlet manifold, this often breaks letting excess air in to the engine.

Thanks--will order the sensor and check for vacuum leaks tomorrow--we're supposed to break 50 degrees on the first day of spring! Almost warm enough to enjoy working on a car in your wet driveway

Ordered Denso front O2 sensor on Amazon--part number 2349020, confirmed on the Denso site. (Had good luck with replacing both Denso sensors on my Tundra, also from Amazon). Seems to be the best price around.

Just an update--finally did the PCV setup with the kit from Groton. It's a lot of parts to take off for a fairly simple thing, but there was a lot of gunk in the trap and the hoses. Took the time to clean the ETM thoroughly while I had it out as well.
Starts perfect, the last trace of an almost stall on hard braking is gone and the idle is perfect. No codes! Yay!!
Fortuitously, while I was messing around in the front area of the motor, I bumped the fan shroud, only to find that it was flapping in the breeze at the bottom. I guess the small bender the car was in popped it out of place. Removed the top screws and bolts, and got it seated properly on the bottom tabs, so one more rattle source gone.
