2008 xc90 Noisy and tough steering

My 08 xc90 is having power steering issues. when you start out cold it works great but when it warms the pump gets noisy and it steers hard. I have replaced belt and have flushed fluid, using the proper fluid. It points to the pump and I would replace it if I was positive that was the problem. You can feel the pump working sometimes and it acts more like something sticking. I am wondering about the sensor on the side of the rack, I believe its the variable assist sensor.

The Servotronic sticking wouldn't make it whine but a faulty pump will. P/S pump failures are rare but they occasionally happen.

When assist level goes down is the fluid in reservoir frothy?

No the fluid doesn't froth.
