Post by abscate »

My blower motor went out tonight, it has been moaning on occasion for the past few months. No blower
Activity in any position of the slider switch .

Can I apply 12VDC to the motor to see if its the motor or resistor pack?

Thanks in advance

FWIW, I bought an aftermarket blower, TYC I think and it works very well. I think if the resistor was going out your blower would have been running at max all the time. First really easy job I did on my v70.

A while back I tested my blower motors with a power supply and a current meter to see how much current was being drawn... I graphed it up here:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 2&p=278168
At about 8V, the fans (both new and old) were drawing between 10 and 11 Amps.

Update. While waiting for the kids in the driveway for school, I pulled the glovebox and put pressure on the white fan connector and the fan started running. It runs at low speed, sounding like a sick whale, but with more pressure runs at full speed.

It looks like there is some wiring in the housing between the actual fan motor (80 USD from a MVS supporting-vendor) as opposed to the whole blower/cage/fan assembly (180 USD from same)

I don't have time to troubleshoot so I ordered the whole cage and will report back some useful diagnostics so that others can diagnose motor vs motor/fan/cage problems.

Update - cleaned contacts over lunch, and fan started up. It is still speed dependent on pressure on the connector, so Im not happy with this as solution. New one on order comes tomorrow.

Swap took 10 minutes. EZ PZ.

I couldn't get the blower cage off the old motor so I'm glad I replaced the whole thing.
