Want to buy a S70 but which one (just crashed V40)

Post by masstapro »

Want a S70 (just crashed V40)
Do not want AWD.
Turbo or not to Turbo?

I'm buying used with potentially around 100k.

What is the difference between stock, GLT and SE.

Should I get non Turbo because it has tons of miles?
What is the difference in HP between Turbo and non.

What year?
doesn't 2000 have an advantage in airbag and abs systems?

Thanks for all, just found you guys!

Best one to get is a '98 S70 in my opinion...less computer aided system so you can work on it easier.

The base has not turbo...169hp or so.
GLT and SE have low pressure turbo's...right under 200hp, I belive
T5 has the high pressure turbo...247 hp or so I believe.

Depends on how fast you like to get up and go...I like my T5...lots of fun to drive. Turbo's on these are not a maitenance issue and they don't tend to break.

Hope this helps.

If you want an S70, stay away from the 99 and 2000 years. They are OK, but a lot of things changed and they weren't one of Volvo's best.

I have a 2000 never had big problems with it, ETM is covered for ten years or 200k, electronics didn't fail. It is the last S70, and I think it is a combination a all the good things from 850's and S70's. As an example, the service light on the 98 model has to be reset by the dealer, not mine.

Good maintenance is the secret(for all cars).

Thanks everyone!

Looking for a 98 and there are many out there so this is good.
The hard part is finding a grey or black leather interior.

I'm told that a rear-main seal costs a lot to fix.
So I'm going to have to look for leaks. Where should I be looking?

Also, I should be able to tell if the Timing-Belt was changed and when.
Where do I look for this?

Thanks again!
Will let you guys know how I make out with pics later!!!

Rear main seal leak is found on the driver's side between the transmission and engine...there is a little weep hole where the leak begins so look there.

For the TB change, look for a sticker on the side of the TB housing or close by...sometimes they put them on the lid of the ECU box. Anyway, there should be some type of sticker with the miles when it was changed. If you find nothing, contact your dealer with your VIN#. If the TB was done by a dealer, they would have record. Finally, you can easily open the TB cover and check the condition of the belt. If in doubt, go ahead and change it....

Remember that with every other TB change, all of the pulley, tensioner and dampener should all be changed.

1999's and 2000's are just fine and in MANY aspects are MUCH better than 1998's

Hey guys, thanks for all your help

I purchase a 98 S70 non turbo, non awd with only 38k miles, for only $6k.

I will have pictures up soon when I get it later this week.

Car is basic but is perfect because it was garaged.

Silver/grey
cloth interior
heated seats
no sunroof
no cd player (can I hook an I-pod up to this?)
has cruise control
power locks
headlight wiper blades

Nice going! Garaged is good in some ways, but really, just for the time, you should consider getting the Timing Belt changed in the near future...rubber does deteriorate with age even if not used much.
Can't wait to see your pictures!

Oh, and yes, you can hook an iPod up to it...you'll have to read the section on that. I have a USA-Spec adapter. It works fine. I know you can add a CD-Changer to yours, so it would act as if it's the changer on your head unit.

99s and 2000's are just fine and usually run better.
Yes they have a potential ETM problem but that has a 200K warranty and with the new software has proven to now be fine

Congrats on the purchese. Change the timing belt NOW for time
(9 years old).
Good insurance for if it breaks, your engine is history
