1995 850GLT Timing belt rubbing

Post by alcapwn1010 »

So the timing belt seems to be rubbing against the pulley for the accessory/serpentine belt, and it's causing quite a whining noise, I have no idea why it would be doing this, so any input at all would be much appreciated. The timing belt has obvious wear on the side that's rubbing, and you can see what it's rubbing against in the pictures included.

I'm not sure, I didn't own the car at the time that the belt was replaced last.

No, it's kind of close to the edge, but it's still on.

Probably the Gates brand. A known issue with Gates.

Best is to stick to Conti or Volvo OEM.
I wrote a TB overhaul DIY in forum, you may want to search for that.

I've had them do that to me after I installed one of the counterfeit INA tensioner rollers. I really can't tell that yours is actually rubbing from looking at the belt. It is normal for some of the fibers to stick out of the edge a bit. Usually when they rub you will have half circles worn on the back of, or all the way through, the timing belt cover.

Well in the top picture where the belt wraps under the crankshaft and comes back up, it's rubbing against the main pulley for the accessory belt.

That is called the harmonic balancer. If the belt is due a change just change it. If the belt is not hanging off of the rollers, I wouldn't worry about it. I thought the cover was between it and the balancer???
