1995 850 Engine stalling issues

So I have a problem that sometimes occurs after starting up the car while doing things around town (ie, the car has recently been running, often within the previous 15-60 minutes, and often has reached regular running temperature). I will start the car, and it will be a slow, often rough start. While the car is idling in either Park or Neutral, the engine will frequently drop from normal revs, around 1000 RMP down to about 600 and then come back again. If I step on the gas while in P or N, the engine will rev up and hold steady as if everything was functioning properly. The main issues occur when I switch to either Reverse or Drive. When this happens, almost immediately the engine will cut out and all the lights on the dashboard come on. When this happens, things like the radio and windshield wipers will keep working. If I shift back to park, turn the engine off, and turn it back on again, the car often works better, with the same struggling to turn over and rev drops in N, P, D, and R, but without the stalling. However, sometimes it takes several tries for it to reach this point, with the engine continually stalling once it is shifted to D or R. This is by no means a constant problem, happening only about once a month, if that, but it always seems to happen in the middle of a busy parking lot. Unfortunately, since the problem so rarely happens, no mechanic has been able to observe it. They look at the battery and spark plugs and things like that and don't report anything wrong with them. Any suggestions?

Do you have a CEL? Have you had the car scanned for codes?
