2008 S60 2.5T - Bad Turbo? Grey/White smoke exhaust

Post by Sagan »

Hi. My name is Joe, and I'm an oilaholic. I was terrible to my S60 and missed several (lots) of oil changes. After finally coming to my senses and getting the oil changed, the car was running great. Then it developed a loping idle in cold weather. Now, about 2000 miles into the oil change, a lot of smoke started coming out of the tailpipe. This white/grey smoke increases with the rpms. After researching a bit on sludge build up, I hit on the idea of a bad/clogged PCV system, so I checked that. Smoke coming from the dipstick tube as well as positive pressure coming out of the oil filler hole (rubber glove test).

Then I started doubting that the amount of smoke could be directly attributable to a clogged pvc system and called a local shop that specializes in Volvos. He said that it is most likely a bad turbo. I can hear the turbo wind up, and I can feel the boost during acceleration. Could it still be a bad turbo? If so, how difficult is it to rebuild a turbo unit for this car? I REALLY don't want to spend 2k to have a mechanic do this.

Thanks in advance. Any and all help is appreciated.

PS - And yes, I know I was an idiot to not get the oil changed regularly. This car is nothing like my old farm trucks, and I shouldn't have treated it that way.

Does anyone know of a way to test the turbo unit, without pulling it?

Hi Alron400 here,

1 I have had the same problem with my first Volvo '94 T5 Estate that was 300,000 ++++ km and it came good with a $46.oo Kit off Ebay.

2 On My son's SAAB '03 95 was fixed with a whole Core that cost $149.oo off E-bay again and both cars are doing real well.

3 On Both cars the issues were addressed by a Full pull down and a real good clean of Everything first, the SAAB had actually snapped it's Turbo Shaft and that is why it need a whole core, but the T5 came good as the shaft just needed the new kit and it ran real well.

4 Good luck with it.

Thanks for the response Alron. What's the skill level required for a rebuild? I haven't pulled an engine in 20 years, but I still learn pretty fast. Is this something a shade tree mechanic can do?

I am getting ready to call GPop tomorrow about a kit, but don't want to get in over my head.

Hi Alron400 here,

1 I do all my work out of a home garage.

2 It is hard to learn, but easier to do when you understand the benefit and the finished Unit gives you great pleasure.

3 Doing the "V.V.T cam and Cam Seals" recently was hard, but not impossible "from a Home Garage Point of View" and the "End Result was Brilliant"!!!!!

4 I did my First Turbo only last Year after 30 years of working on cars and the re-build was quite easy for me.

5 The Pull out of the car is easier than you would think.

6 Getting the Turbo out of a car that has done 300,000 ++++ km allows you to find a lot of other things that have also gone wrong like the Burnt Silicone Hose showed me once it was out!!!!

7 Good Luck with what you decide to do.

Exhaust smoke can come from many sources. The entire post below provides quite a few methods in tracking in down. Could be as simple as going to a higher viscosity dino oil.

Thanks BKM. Just finished reading that thread. Is it really possible for a clogged PCV System to generate a LOT of smoke/exhaust? I mean like a mosquito fogger truck going down the street.

Also... Does anyone know of a good write up on cleaning the PCV system for an 08 S60?
