1994 xc90 Fuel Smell @ startup and shut down

Hello Everyone,

I have a '94 xc90 with 110,000 miles. The car runs fine and has served us well. Recently I have noticed that when I shut the car down and exit the vehicle I smell gas. I can also smell it when I start the car.

There is nothing visual to indicate anything - meaning no smoke or anything like that. Nor do I see any visual signs of a fuel leak in the driveway.

I have a minor knowledge of engines so please bear with me. Could this be some sort of a fuel pump issues or even an "air" pump that moves fumes upon start up and shut down?

Pardon my ignorance here....any help is greatly appreciated as always.

I would look at the fuel rail, pay particular attention to the connection on the fuel rail. It can be that the pipe connecting to the fuel rail has a loose clamp or the pipe itself has become worn and brittle and no longer keeps a good seal. If you are standing in front of the car, facing it, the pipe will be on your left hand side.

Here is picture where you can look and compare. The 1st picture is of the shradder valve, i have never seen it leak …but there is always a first time.
