That's right, I did edit the post about being Volvo's decision. It was Aisin maintenance program in fault, same issues happened indeed to many Maxima, Saturn models and others

Will there be a write up for Solenoid rebuild as time permits?
It is best coming from you Mike.

Mike,
Thanks for sharing your efforts with the solenoid refurb, very inspiring.

I'd be interested in your opinion on my V70 transmission issues.
I've basically lost all 3 rd gear- just gets revs- no gear.

Would this be a solenoid issue or the actual gear band?
Cheers,
Locky

I wish it were that easy:  this thread may shed some light on the 3rd gear circuit: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=36790

Look at the last post in the thread. If I sort out my own issue I'll repost here to let you know.

On my 2002 XC70 I just read the car with Vida (heaven knows why I didn't do this earlier!! ) and it provided a code of TCM-0113 which is Pressure solenoid SLS signal missing.

With insufficient pressure to drive the 3rd gear circuit through the valve body the B4 piston will not actuate and squeeze the friction clamp band over the drum to provide 3rd gear.

Need to backprobe the wiring harness to TCM to check continuity to SLS solenoid and clean TCM connections just in case.
Also need to check PNP as reverse lights aren't working (could just be globes)

Once all this is checked I may remove VB cover (again!!) and remove SLS for a proper check of connector and coil resistance. The SLS solenoid may have totally failed.

Ordered a new wiring loom for solenoids from Tasca today for $142usd. I had an open circuit across the SLS solenoid which I measured at the connector. This is the second valve body I've had in the car with the same result so I'm pretty certain it's the loom.

I won't be cracking the valve body cover to check if the connector fell off the SLS solenoid until the loom arrives as I just want to put a new loom in and be done with it.

I can just about remove a valve body cover in under 2 hours now

I had actually left some plugs disconnected, however 3 rd gear is still absent. I'm just about to drop the subframe 6-8 inches and access the side cover in order to replace the 3rd gear band clamp on the 2002 XC70. Will post up some pics in a separate thread and link to it.

S60 AWD from this thread still going strong as far as I'm aware
