So did someone do a recent PCV job on your son's car?

No we haven't done the PCV.

Not sure why the intake manifold would spring a leak like this. We've had the car 2 years; from 147K to 170K miles.

I have done normal routine maintenance, it's had the water pump replaced within the last year and I did the timing belt last August.

But nothing that would upset the intake.

Planning to replace the intake gasket, and injector seals within the next week.

Since the intake manifold has to come off, this would be a very opportune time to service the PCV. I'd give it a look, at least pull the oil trap to ream out the block passage and replace the short hoses from the trap to the block. Replace the two long lines with bulk hose and you're good to go.

You can do better with a 1/4 inch Tygon tube as a stethoscope for finding noises/ vacuum leaks.

I've taught my teens to isolate the noisy part under the hood using this. Latest victim has been power steering pump on Admirals BMW
