Can the ECU detect low oil 1998 v70 ?

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

Can the ECU tell when the oil is low, possibly with a oil pressure sensor, and try to stop the car from running?
I wondered about this because i had a stalling issue recently and found that the oil was down by almost a quart.
I did not get an oil light or any trouble light or trouble code though.

Any ideas if this would stop the car from running?

Thanks.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Not that I have ever heard of. Best warning is the oil pressure warning light just before your engine goes 'Boom'!

There are many things that can cause stalling from old cracked hoses, MAF failing, fuel issues, on -98 cars the ignition coil failing, cam or crank position sensors to name a few. If you have recently been fishing around the distributor and airbox area, it is possible to move the cam position sensor cable too close to the distributor. That then interrupts the signal for the cam sensor and kills the engine. I had that issue many years ago with a 93 850 after a dealer visit. They diagnosed the cam sensor, I diagnosed the wire issue. My fix was cheaper!

My wife drove our 95 10V to the point where the oil light came on. It was low by almost 2 quarts. The rod knock vanished, and the motor runs to this date.
What's the point of this story: The oil light comes on 2 liters low, so I think your stalling issue has nothing to do with the oil.

Being a quart low is not gonna cause a stall.
If it did, you’d have much bigger problems.

Any Check Engine Light? OBD ll codes?

Regarding whether or not the sensor and
warning light are tied into the ECU, have
you downloaded the manual of schematics?
It should be clearly indicated there.

That's very interesting. I was wondering, can i change the cam and crank sensors myself?

Hi,

Thank you. I had suspected that but with this car i never know what they did with it.

No check engine light, no OBDII codes, and no pending OBDII codes.

I used to have some schematics but not sure what i did with them. I'll try to find that publication thanks.

Yes you can change both yourself. Cam sensor was quoted at 1 hr at the dealer, I think it took my about 10 mins. Crank is a bit more involved, but again do-able. Not re-programming. Fit and play. With the cam sensor wire, just make it is routed as far away from the distributor as possible. I would try that first before spending any money.

If you have some good 1/4" extensions the crank sensor isn't too bad of a job, you could probably get both done in an hour

Thanks Neil.

Are these two hard to find on the car? I guess under the hood somewhere right?

Here is a link to Our good friend Robert's video on crank sensor:

Here is the cam position sensor swap from Pelican parts:

Apologies, it was the crank position sensor that was the issue on my 850, not the cam position sensor!
