'95 854T Possible to clean TB well without removal?

Post by alschnertz »

1995 854T 230,000 miles

I'm having an intermittent surge and intermittent stalling issue.
Usually happens within first 5 - 10 minutes of driving and when the throttle is barely open.
If I notice and catch it quick enough, I can feather the throttle to keep it from stalling and it will return to normal. There doesn't seem to be any pattern.
There are no codes.

Here's what's been replaced and how long ago...
Last week - Swapped in a new fuel pump relay and IAC was cleaned;
3,000 miles - Spark plugs and air filter;
4,000 miles - AMM;
10,000 miles - Front O2 sensor;
20,000 miles - CPS;
25,000 miles - Fuel pump and filter;
30,000 miles - Cap and rotor.

I'm thinking dirty TB, but after pulling the hose, it really doesn't look too dirty in there. I did spray cleaner in and wiped it out. But I'm wondering if that's good enough. I know on my van (MPV) it is not possible to access certain ports inside the TB without removal. Is the Volvo the same?

Thanks

Try cleaning the IAC.

I would soak the air filter with carb cleaner. Nothing beats actually taking the components apart and cleaning them with an old tooth brush and some kerosene.

I would try the IAC, and the TB.

Oops, OP says the IAC was already cleaned.

Where it says "AMM" what does that mean? Did you clean the MAF, put in a new one? Two comments in advance: it must be a Bosch MAF and cleaning rarely does any good unless the MAF is visibly dirty to begin with.

I think AMM is Air Mass Meter which is the MAF.

Ah yes, to clarify: my question is, what service does that mean was performed?

Sorry about that, the AMM was replaced 4,000 miles ago with a Bosch unit.
Been tinkering with it this afternoon and pulled the TB off. It had a little bit of crud on it, but not enough to hamper any movement. gave it a good scrubbing.

But while I had it open, I could see the EGR port inside the intake manifold and that looks almost completely plugged. I'll scrape and vacuum the bits out of there.

Think a plugged EGR port would cause the hesitation at light throttle and / or the stalling?
