1996 850 Timing Belt Change/Exhaust Cam is off

Post by rrochell8 »

Been doing the fun timing belt change. Got everything off relatively easily. Got everything back on pretty easy as well. Had trouble with belt down around the crank but finally managed to get it past that bolt or whatever it was sticking out down there....

Didn't have the locking tool but took good care not to move things around. Once the belt was on, I put the black plastic piece back on to check the marks before I turned the crank and pulled the pin. Exhaust cam is WAY OFF! About three teeth! I truly can't think for any time when I hit it or moved it. What I need to know now is what to do to get it back. Do I just turn it counterclockwise and put it back in position? This is my first time and just want to be sure. Thanks in advance.

As long as the crank is on the mark, you can turn that exhaust cam (or either cam) all you want. Just put it back in place.

It is common for the exhaust cam to move during the belt change, due to pressure from the lifters.

Yes, just move it back where you need it. If the crank is on the mark, you can turn both of those cams around 360 degrees without any piston contact.

Thanks for all the help. Another quick question. I got my timing belt kit from eeuro and it was an OEM type deal. All the parts look good except the roller bearing just under the intake cam sprocket. The box is an INA box. Made in France, but the part doesn't look like the INA I took off the car. Not only does it look different, if just feels cheap. Could it be a counterfeit? Don't want to go thru all of this fun just to put a piece on that is going to fail. Don't know what I expect. Just want someone to tell me if they have come across this problem.

I hear ya, that is worth checking out. Wait for more people to chime in but, does it say INA anywhere on the pulley? Maybe post up a pic.

The first INA rollers up to about 4 years ago had a large exposed bearing and now INA rollers (and almost all aftermarket pulleys) have a central needle roller type bearing with a plastic cap. The new type has more stable tracking of the belt due to its greater depth down the central axis.

The older type is only available made by URO under part number 8630590 which I just fitted to my 2002 XC. URO use a quality NTN branded bearing. I purchased it from Amazon. You'll see a review against the product which is mine. It will also fit your 850 and is an exact copy of the old OEM pulleys on 850s.

I like the old style as well. The new style is hollow from what I have read seen. I have not read of any issues with the new type.

Mike, I am about to do a timing belt job on my 95. What is your current opinion about these old school style rollers with NTN bearing, that URO is actually still selling as part number 8630590? I have one here that I bought a couple years ago, at your suggestion, was planning on using it unless ... thanks!

Hi Erik. I've used that same old style roller manufactured by another company on quite a few cars now. They too use the NTN bearing so it's probably a reboxed version of the URO one. I've checked them for grease leakage and they seem to be OK after about 30,000ks (that's the most any of them has done).

Recently I used a non-INA copy of the latest pulley and it seemed to be tracking badly. I believe that the new style has more tendency to cause the belt to track badly when not made by INA.

I've purchased genuine INA kits from Rexbo in Germany which include an INA belt made in Germany for my 2001 T5. In my opinion these are the bees knees for value apart from Genuine Blue Box or a full INA kit from FCP.

Hope this helps.
