2003 S80 Instrument Cluster Pending Failure

Hello Everyone,
My son was driving my 03 S80 and all of the sudden the instrument cluster went dead. The digital clock was the only section of the panel working. He came in the house and told me what happened so I went outside and started the car and it was fine. I know the cluster is about to fail completely because this happened to me a few years back when I was the primary driver. It would intermittingly fail and come back on. Is there a place I can send the part and have it re-built, and can you purchase a used cluster and install it in another car. I tried the later and it did not work but someone mentioned I should have taken it to a dealership and had them download new software. I didn't go to the dealership because if the download didn't work, I would have still had to pay over $100 so I purchased it new. The total cost for a new cluster is over $1100 and it may be a deal breaker for my baby if there is no place that will re build it.
