It reads around 8-9 volts with the engine running. The battery checks in at 13.8 volts, the standard charging voltage. The temp gauge reads real low, too. I've ordered a new sender. Also, the "check engine" light stays on.
This car has 181,000 miles on it, and has had a few repairs, some by folks who didn't know or didn't care what they were doing. I replaced the (2-year-old) radiator (I made mounts by cutting shock mount biscuits in half), the timing belt and front seal, and the lower part of the thermostat housing, and tested the thermostat. The housing broke while I was trying to extract the cover screws; the torx splines were stripped and the screws were frozen because of no never-seize. The bottom screw was hard to get out without removing more brackets etc. I tried to get M7x1.0 socket head screws in order to use a ball head hex wrench on them, but they aren't available. I finally cut the threads off some 5/16" socket head screws and rethreaded them with M7x1.0 threading die. Works great - I recommend it to anyone who has to change the thermostat lower housing!

I looked at the offending gauge and sure enough it's the gas gauge! Thanks for pointing that out. I'm used to seeing numbers on voltmeters, but not on gas gauges.
Still, the temp gauge reads low and the check engine light stays on. I've got an OBDII scanner coming.

That's a good one.
Chances are, you have a bad thermostat. My guess is that this car is new to you???

I tested the thermostat and installed a new temp sensor and thermostat gasket. I'll test drive tomorrow and see what happens.
My first Volvo was a '63 122S. Since then I've had a '60 544, a 58 544, a '73 145, an '80 245, and an '83 264 that I converted to gas. My present daily driver is an '84 764 GLE Diesel (I was a heavy equipment mechanic for 35 years).
This is my first time working on a modern Volvo. Where I did fleet service at a mine, I worked on both obsolete and modern pickups and trucks up to 2000 HP 170 tons, as well as all kinds of tractors and ground equipment.
If not for sites like this one, I don't know where I'd get the advice I need. THANKS!!
