2004 XC90 Transmission-2nd Replacement/Radiator and Hoses

Post by 2 Time Volvo gal »

Hoping to help others navigate this issue. Any advice for me would be great. In 2008, at 62K miles the transmission in my 2004 XC90 failed after regular, diligent maintenance. $5500, all tolled, to cover transmission issues. I petitioned Volvo, as I brought the car in 4 times under warranty for transmission complaints, and they refunded me $1500 for the tranny replacement. At 112K the Transmission Urgent Service light came on and I am being told I need a new transmission because the radiator and hoses should have been replaced also so that the transmission and coolant fluids do not mingle, a problem with this GM transmission. Volvo is paying for parts, but I still have to fork over an additional $1100 for labor. Plus, the faulty transmission problems and service record on this vehicle diminish my ability to resell at a good rate for a well-maintained car. I'll be out $5100 + diminished value as a result of a recall item that I called attention to only one month after purchasing the new vehicle. My advice: be sure the radiator and hoses are replaced with the tranny or you may be looking at a second replacement. Replacing or rebuilding the tranny alone may not solve the problem. Also, discover and document whether the new tranny is new or rebuilt and what brand it is. Hope this helps someone.
