So I've got a 2004 V70 with the T5 and manual transmission (M56LK) that recently started making noise in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The car has 275,000 miles on it and the clutch is still very strong. I drive fairly gently and rarely shift gears quickly. The noise started about 2000 miles ago and I recently changed the transmission oil hoping that would help. It didn't help, but the good news is that the oil that came out, though dirty, had absolutely NO metallic particles (sparkles) in it at all - even verified by running a magnet around in the drain pan.
The noise sounds like a plastic jar of nuts and bolts being shaken. There is absolutely NO noise in 1st or 5th. It's also silent the instant I push the clutch in or pop it out of gear. The noise doesn't seem to change with wheel speed, but does change with gears.
Might it be bad bearings on the countershaft?
Additionally, will I be able to get this transmission rebuilt, or will I even be able to find one in the US?
Any help or direction is greatly appreciated!

I’ve never found a rebuilder except in the UK
Junkyard/PnP is your answer here. They aren’t that rare.

Mine is making a lot of noise too. Quiet in 5th.
I pulled a spare from my kids car that ran out of oil.
Volvo doesn't supply any of the internal parts - though I hear a lot of the bearings are standard.
I heard reports 15 yeas ago of people not being able to find a shop to rebuild a transmission in the USA - it's gotten worse in that time.

How long has yours been making noise ADent? Have you swapped the transmissions yet and are you going to open up the noisy one to see what was causing it?
Sorry to bring up an old post but i am having the same noise coming from 03 V70 T5
Did you find what was causing it ?
Also is there a difference in the m56lk boxes ?
As some use 21 spline and some 23
Any help is greatly appreciated

You get different boxes in EU models because Volvo loves you. The good news finding a rebuilder of a manual transmission in EU should be a lot easier that in North America
